Filming is underway on the ninth series of MASTERPIECE and ITV hit show ‘Grantchester’, and Tom Britney, who plays Reverend Will Davenport, has been confirmed to star in the new series.
Britney has played the role opposite Robson Green since 2019, and has decided to leave to pursue other projects. With Britney leaving the show, Rishi Nair (‘Hollywood’, ‘Count Abdullah’) is said to be joining the show as charismatic vicar Alfie Cotter.
Speaking about his departure, the actor said, “I’ve had an amazing time playing Will Davenport for the past five years. I got to solve crimes with my best friend, and I got to work with the best cast and crew I could ask for. I miss him more than anything. But as it once was for me, it is time for the baton to be passed and I am very excited for Rishi to join the ‘Granchester’ family.
Nair said: “I am delighted to be joining Grantchester. The welcome and support from everyone has been amazing. The show’s success and the reason we’re here for a ninth season is a testament to all the people who’ve worked on it in the past. I’m really excited to get started and can’t wait for ‘Granchester’ fans to meet Alfie and see what he has in store for him.
In the ninth series of ‘Granchester’ It’s 1961 and life is good for Will and Geordie. The family is always together, from Sunday lunches to planning summer holidays and with cherished grandparents Mrs C and Jack, and foster uncles Daniel and Leonard, it’s one big happy family! But when Will is presented with a life-changing offer, can he leave Grantchester and Jordin behind?
As Geordie struggles with personal loss and the ever-growing family conflict between Cathy and her teenage daughter, Esme has no one to turn to. But his days working with the vicar were not over when he arrested a criminal who had infiltrated the vicarage.
Reverend Alfie Cotter also has an instinctive distrust of authority and a reluctance to get involved in murder investigations. But Alfie and Geordie discover they have more in common than they first think, and Alfie realizes that murder is never far away in Grantchester.
From deadly circus performers, abandoned babies and hateful storytellers to missing valets and murderous statists. Together, Geordie and Alfie witness first-hand how religion can destroy, but how faith, love and friendship can offer hope – and renewal.
