Readers of Riley Sager and Grady Hendrix’s ‘Burn the Negative’, a shocking and suspenseful read by journalist Josh Wining, relive the curse of a famous defamation film made and haunting.
Arriving in LA to visit the set of a new streaming horror series, journalist Laura Warren sees a man jump off a bridge and land in the back of her car. Here we go, she thought. It has started. Because the series she’s reporting is a remake of a 90s horror flick. Damn ’90s horror flick, in which she starred as a child—and has been running her whole life.
In ‘The Guesthouse’, Laura plays the little girl with a terrifying gift for telling people how the needle man is going to kill them. When the film’s eight cast and crew died in shocking on-screen deaths, the film became a cult classic and ruined her life. Left behind, Laura changed her name and accent, dyed her hair, and crossed the Atlantic. But some scripts don’t want to stay buried.
Now, as the body count rises again, Laura finds herself on the run with her aspiring actress sister and jaded psychic, hoping to end the curse once and for all and avoid the needle man’s deadly reach.
The inspiration behind Winning’s second novel comes from his own experience: “The idea of ’burning the negative’ came about in I met Lorraine Warren on a press trip in 2013. She was a famous paranormal investigator for cases like The Amityville Horror and was portrayed by Vera Farmiga in The Conjuring movies. I found Mrs. Warren so fascinating (yes, he was photographed with her) that one day I decided to write a book about a paranormal investigator and that’s how the character of Beverly came about. I decided to pair her up with a journalist to solve some heinous crimes (write what you know!) and ‘Burn the Negative’ was born. As a journalist I have been lucky enough to visit many film and TV sets (‘The Walking Dead’, ‘The Game of Thrones’, ‘Muppets Most Wanted’, ‘Vikings’, ‘Independence Day: Resurgence’ and ‘300: Rise of an Empire’). , I find that making films is often as fascinating as the films themselves. That’s why I enjoy writing fiction about what happens behind the scenes before the cameras roll, in those stripped-down, hands-on moments.
Well constructed and well written, ‘Burn the Negative’ is surprising, satisfying and endlessly fun, the kind of intelligent escapism that today’s readers are looking for. Fans of classic horror and slasher films, Stephen Graham Jones and Alma Katsu will enjoy the details and quotes included in this novel.
