Tom Cruise – the biggest movie star in the world – returns to one of the best action series Hollywood has to offer, in this highly anticipated seventh installment of ‘Mission: Impossible’. Now you know what to expect… insane action and truly jaw-dropping stunts – this time culminating in a truly insane motorcycle jump off a cliff, naturally done by Mr. Cruise himself, and a train carriage sequence that will leave you reeling. – Damage caused. But while all of these things are great, ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout – Part One’ suffers from a few issues that keep it from being 2018’s greatest ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’.
The plot involves the past of Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) before his involvement with the IMF (Mission Impossible). His name is Gabriel (Isai Morales) and he’s working for a sentient AI ‘Entity’ who wants to be ruled by every major government on the planet to benefit them in future war efforts. As Ethan must reunite his IMF team – including Ilsa Fast (Rebecca Ferguson), Luther Stickel (Ving Rams) and Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), he must stop at nothing to destroy the threat – from world agencies (including the US ) to stop him and find him for themselves.
It is safe to say that Tom Cruise is the savior of modern cinema. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ last summer single-handedly kept the magic of big-screen entertainment alive and provided a much-needed lifeline to a post-pandemic world where cinemas were largely out of business. Cruise is the biggest and best movie star in the world, and his quest to deliver the ultimate cinematic fare is evident in every aspect of ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout: Part One’. The scenes he does himself give the film a realism and authenticity that Hollywood can often only dream of. Cruise is 100% why this franchise is so popular and he continues to deliver great performances of the highest order alongside his portrayal of a man trying to keep the world from burning down.
Vanessa Kirby makes a very welcome return as the White Widow and she’s a joy to watch, especially in an expanded role this time around. New faces include the lovely Hayley Atwell as Grace, a character who perhaps feels a little too cliche at times, but adds some spark as a thief who unwittingly gets involved in this massive mission. ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ favorite Pom Klementieff is good as a dangerous assassin with a knack for fashion, but ‘The Princess Bride’ royalty Cary Elwes always delights when he’s on screen. I feel that Esai Morales, an actor I often admire a lot, is a little too flat and bland as the main villain of this season, which is a real shame. The best supporting actor is Henry Cherney, though, who gave his memorable role as Kittridge in that famous first ‘Mission: Impossible’ film. His exchanges with Cruise are great and as tense as you’d hope.
These movies lead the way with crazy performances and shows thanks to IMAX. A blockbuster cinema like this deserves a big screen to truly enjoy all the efforts and scenes. IMAX Laser is an immersive viewing experience that enhances the enjoyment of movies on this incredible scale. ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Count Part One’ is the perfect poster child for this format. This is a movie made to be enjoyed the ‘IMAX Experience’ way, and if you can afford it, you won’t regret your decision. IMAX puts the viewer right into the action, whether it’s the crazy car chase on Rome, the falling train carriages or that now famous motorcycle cliff jump.
‘Mission: Impossible – Dead reckoning Part One’ is a fun ride that delivers spectacle and grandeur. However, until ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Story Part Two’ opens in theaters, it feels like ‘Part One’, with plot holes and questionable plot threads that seem to have been hanging around for a year. Leaning somewhat on past action sequences, ‘The Phantom Menace Part One’ is a perfectly good action drama, but one that ultimately doesn’t take too many chances. Perhaps the second chapter of this story will tie everything together. Too many shots were unnecessarily shown in features and trailers that should have left the audience cold when watching the film for the first time, given too many scenes in the promotional campaign. There was too much pre-release scene exposure in ‘Dead Reckoning Part One’ which was a serious mistake. For now, ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout Part One’ is a fun watch, but it needs a few tweaks to rekindle that genuine spark of magic that made ‘Mission: Impossible – Fallout’ such an indisputable success.
