22 year old talented musician Etta Marcus has released her latest single ‘Mechanical Bull’ out now on Polydor Records. This release follows her critically acclaimed EP ‘Heart Shaped Fracture’ in January, which received critical acclaim.
‘Mechanical Bull’ is a sarcastic love letter that explores the eternal nature of a monogamous lifestyle. Etta explains, “I wanted to express my needs and concerns around the shame that comes with not conforming and stepping outside of society’s expectations.
The single was co-written with Etta’s creative partner, producer Josh Scarbrough, and produced/mixed by Rod Hyde Macdonald, known for working with artists such as The xx and Beck.
‘Mechanical Bull’ hints at the world of music Marcus has been working on while isolated in a cabin in Whitstable. Vocally, it represents another evolution in the singer-songwriter’s style, defying categorization and establishing her unique artistic identity. Critics have drawn comparisons to the likes of Lana Del Rey, Fiona Apple, Sharon Van Etten and Phoebe Bridgers, but Etta’s influences range from David Bowie and Joni Mitchell to Radiohead and Everything But Girl. She is against being limited to a certain genre, saying, “If someone calls me something, I immediately want to do the opposite. How would you describe Jeff Buckley of Cass Elliot, The Strokes, and Wannabe?”
Marcus’ journey was marked by strength and artistic growth. She faced trying times after being kicked out of jazz school when the epidemic started. But, over the past couple of years, she’s established herself as one of the most exciting new artists of our time, amassing a following drawn to her captivating storytelling skills.
Fans can catch Marcus performing at various festivals throughout the summer, including Barn on the Farm, Latitude, Camp Bestival and Green Man.
