Nashville dominates the capital. Musician Annie Scherer has placed in the final four of the Music City Meme Contest for emerging artists hosted by Nashville’s Lightning 100 radio station.
The Voorheesville native, who moved to Nashville in October 2021, heard about last year’s Music City Mayhem competition and decided to take a chance this year and show low expectations. Shearer was one of 32 Nashville artists selected to compete in Music City Mayhem.
“I really thought I wasn’t going to hear anything,” Scherer said. “When I received the letter to be a finalist, I was very excited. I know I have to try to get the best I can.
Artists compete against each other and each week the public votes for their favorites online. Shearer and indie rock band Nite Tide are two of the artists featured in the top four. The remaining two artists will be decided immediately after the final voting round before the end of the live finals.
The final four battle it out on April 27 and 3 for the Mayhem crown in Music City and Linsley in Nashville. The election will be conducted in person and online event from 7:00 PM to 12:00 PM. The grand prize winner will receive an artist development and promotion package valued at $9,700.
Despite its success, Music City Mayhem affected Shearer’s career; The Lightning 100 performed their music along with other contestants’ songs during the competition and were able to interact with the Nashville music community. However, the win will earn him more Lightning 100 ads and streaming, as well as membership in HOME, which provides resources and studio space to artists primarily in the pop and alternative scene.
“(House membership) is something I’ve always thought about but never really thought about,” Scherer said. “Having that package (radio) and subscription will help a lot… It will be a step forward. I want to thank everyone who voted and took the time to listen to our music.”
