Gulf Coast 13, Riverview 9
Gulf Coast survived the Rams’ second half in the Class 2A regional semifinals with a balanced offensive game and strong defense. The Sharks lost to Riverview 13-12 in overtime last year and have trailed the Rams ever since.
“Last year we lost in overtime and we really wanted revenge,” said Kali Cleary. “I think we decided to beat them tonight. It was a great feeling to win and make the playoffs.”
The first half was a back-and-forth battle with both teams trading goals in the first ten minutes. In the 16th minute, Cleary scored two goals in one minute to give the Sharks a 5-3 win.
In the first half, Gulf Coast dominated possession, turnovers and free kicks.
Less than two minutes into the game, Rhys Hudek put the Sharks on the board and tied the game in the 17th minute. He finished the first half with a hat trick.
Cleary had three goals and two assists in the first half to lead the Sharks 8-5. He finished the tournament with five goals.
The Sharks extended their lead in the second half, holding the Gulf Coast Rams scoreless for 16 minutes.
Peyton Davidson and Cleary combined for four unanswered goals in the first eight minutes of the second half to take a 12-5 lead. Davidson finished with five goals and two assists.
“Our transition in the second half was unbelievable,” Cree said. “We weren’t really selfish, we shared the ball and played as a team.
The Rams came alive in the 13th minute through Susan Lotter. The Rams scored four unanswered goals, but the Sharks’ defense held strong and held the lead.
The Lowther, Ohio native had just six goals this year and was shutout on the night. Nolan Knack made several defensive stops against Lowther as the Sharks scored just three goals and had one assist in the win.
“We really [dived up] tonight,” head coach Lynn Garrison said. But the defense missed in key situations. Knack rescues Susan and just fills her up. It was very pleasant.”

Bishop Vero 2, Fort Myers 1
The game, which was expected for two months, has ended its hopes.
Bishop Vero scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning in the top of the frame in what should have been the team’s season opener, but was delayed by dangerous field conditions. .
“We’ve been playing tough teams and things like that all year, just getting us to the playoffs and that’s what we’re trying to build on,” Bishop coach Vero said. . Chris Gatewood said:
With Bishop Vero’s Victoria Ash and Fort Myers’ Julia Knoller battling in a tight circle to limit contact and both defenders playing flawlessly, the run would be the difference. Ash finished with 10 strikeouts, his second in the game and the 500th of his career, while allowing just three hits and an unearned run. Nohler allowed just two hits in three innings and one walk until the sixth inning for the Vikings (18-3).
Fort Myers (11-11) picked up the first game in the top of the sixth. With runners on first and second and no outs, Knowler’s throw to left field was misplayed, scoring Tegan Webb and giving the Green Wave their first run. With two runners on and still no outs, the Greens couldn’t get another pass when an error on a hit attempt and Ash’s two outs ended the frame.
“They played one more game than us,” Fort Myers coach Dan Mills said. “And we had a lot of chances, and we had a lot of chances. This is the difference.
With one out, Vero’s Jalen Riley singled, stole second and took third on McKenna Robbins’ foul ball to Knowler. Sarah Yamrick singled to Riley, Robbins was thrown out as Yamrick advanced to second. Melanie Moreno finished first in Yamrick and was the winner.
The Ashes sealed the win by winning the second and ending the game.
“I knew we were going to score in the bottom of the sixth,” Ash said. “I had full confidence in my team, especially the team we came from.
We’re excited to play them because especially for me and Coach Chris, you know Coach Chris was the coach there, I played to win there (Freshman) because we’ve lost the last few years, so we just got our win. It doesn’t look better to get it.
