The Oscars contain a wide biography, weak characters and a triumphant story of chaos and success. These themes have characterized the sports genre since the creation of the film. In the history of the Academy Awards, 591 films have been nominated for Best Picture, with 95 winners listed. Depending on your definition of what qualifies as a “sports movie,” 17 sports-themed films were nominated, with three taking home coveted statues.
In honor of Ben Affleck’s sports drama “Air,” which tells the story of basketball rookie Michael Jordan’s pursuit of Nike Corp. to draw, it lists the 17 sports films ( probably tied to “Air”) nominated for Best Picture. in 2024).
According to the World Encyclopedia of Sports, more than 8,000 different sports have been compiled. Each of them can inspire filmmakers. It is debatable whether “sport” is a genre in itself, as it can serve as a starting point for many different narratives. But inspiration is universal.
Boxing movies have always felt like a separate entity from mainstream sports movies. The most popular and well-known sport on film, boxing movies often follow the same line: “It’s about fighting inside and outside the ring.” (See Heidi Gardner’s “Saturday Night Live” sketch as Angel, the girlfriend of every boxer in every boxing movie.)
The Academy has overlooked some great sports movies. Notable forks and worthy entrants include Penny Marshall’s hilarious women’s baseball comedy A League of Their Own (1992) and Gina Prince-Bytewood’s crime-free debut Love and Basketball (2000). Steve James’ new documentary “Hope’s Dream” (1994) was overlooked in that category, while the more popular “Hoosiers” (1986) sadly slipped under the radar.
Air stars Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Chris Messina, Chris Tucker and Viola Davis. Amazon Studios movies are now playing in theaters before going to Prime Video.

The Blind Side (2009)
Credited producers : Gil Netter, Andrew A. Kosova, Broderick Johnson
Director : John Lee Hancock
Actors : Sandra Bullock, Tim McGraw, Quinton Aaron, Lily Collins, Jay Hale, Kim Dickens, Kathy Bates
Studio : Warner Bros.Other Oscar nominations/awards: Best Actress (Sandra Bullock, winner)
Sandra Bullock has been a star since the ’80s, scoring leading roles in Speed (1993) and While You Were Sleeping (1996), but we don’t think the Academy will reward her.
Then came The Blind Side, in which Bullock League played Anne Toohey, who along with her family becomes the “white savior” of poor black children in the real-life story of John Lee Hancock and the NFL . All Americans. Michael Oher.
This movie didn’t get good reviews, but making money can do wonders for your Oscar campaign. Not to mention, football comes front and center during that awards season.
Her surprise Best Picture nomination came alongside Bullock’s Best Actress win, and she’s released some creditable films like Fantastic Mr. Fox, The Messenger and Star Trek.
However, it won for Most Meritorious Motion Picture: Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker. Either way, I will always love Sandy.

Sea Biscuits (2003)
Producers credited: Kathleen Kennedy, Frank Marshall, Gary Ross
director : Gary Ross
With: Tobey Maguire, Jeff Bridges, Chris Cooper, Elizabeth Banks, Gary Stevens, William H. Massey
Studio : Universal PicturesOther Oscar nominees/winners: Adapted Screenplay (Gary Ross), Production Design (Jeanine Opeval, Leslie Bishop), Cinematography (John Schwartzman), Costume Design (Judiana Makowsky), Film Editing (William Goldenberg), Sound Mixing (Andy Nelson, (Anna Behlmer, Todd A. Maitland).
Director Gary Ross, in his pre-Hunger Games days, presents the story of horse racing during the Great Depression. Perhaps in the same boat as the Best Picture winner (1981), this film is largely forgotten, but that’s because it feels so stuck in its time. In the early years, it was common to see studios seeking attention with softballs like “Seabiscuit,” which grossed more than $140 million.
On a recent visit, I was reacquainted with Jeff Bridges’ stellar performance, recalling how, during that awards season, William H. Macy scored a Globe nomination for Fast Talking Commentator and Chris Cooper received a SAG nod. Like a wise horse trainer. Nothing about Bridges or star Tobey Maguire.
-
The Train (1981)
Nominated Producer: David Putnam (winner)
director : Hugh Hudson
Actors : Ben Cross, Ian Charles, Nigel Havers, Cheryl Campbell, Alice Krige, Lindsay Anderson, Dennis Christopher, Nigel Davenport, Brad Davies, Peter Egan, John Gielgud, Ian Holm, Patrick McGee.
Studio : 20th Century FoxOther Oscar nominees/winners: Director , Supporting Actor (Ian Holm), Adapted Screenplay (Colin Welland, Winner), Costume Design (Milena Cannonero, Winner), Film Editing (Terry Rowling), Original Score (Vangelis, Winner )
These days people mention the sheet music for Chariots of Fire before they talk about anything else. This is mainly because the film is one of the winners that is rarely talked about and does not stand out as a bad film in a year of films that gave the world many memorable films like “Raids of the Lost Ark” and “Red Reds”. “.
The story of two British sprinters at the 1924 Olympics marked the end of five years of Oscar-nominated sports films, but led to the most memorable decade for the 80’s Best Picture winners.
-
Heaven Can Wait (1978)
Producer Credit : Warren Beatty
Directors : Warren Beatty, Buck Henry
Actors : Warren Beatty, Julie Christie, James Mason, Charles Grodin, Diane Cannon, Buck Henry, Vincent Guardia, Jack Warden
Studio : Paramount PicturesOther Oscar nominees/winners: Director , Best Actor (Warren Beatty), Supporting Actor (Jack Warden), Supporting Actor (Diane Cannon), Adapted Screenplay (Elaine May, Warren Beatty), Production Design (Paul Silbert , Edwin O’Donovan) ; George Gaines, winner), cinematography (William A. Fraker), original score (Dave Grusin)
The Oscars don’t often get great comedies, but Warren Beatty and Buck Henry’s fantasy sports comedy about a Los Angeles Rams quarterback mistakenly ascended to heaven.
Co-written by Beatty and Elaine May, this film poses morally provocative questions about mortality and our purpose on earth.
In another run of nominations for Best Picture of the 1970s, the film lost to “The Deer Hunter,” “A Single Woman,” “Homecoming,” and “Midnight Express.”
-
Champion (1931)
Named Manufacturer: No name.
Director : King Vidor
With: Wallace Beery, Jackie Cooper, Irene Rich, Roscoe Ates
Studio : Metro-Goldwyn-MayerOther Oscar nominees/winners : Director, Best Actor (Berry, winner), Original Story (Frances Marion, winner)
The hard-drinking boxer is played by Walter Beery, whose career took off after his release from prison, helped by his role in Min and Bill that same year. At the fifth Academy Awards, the best actor category was tied for the first time in history, with Berry and Frederick March for “Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde” sharing the award. Ironically, March received one more vote than Berry, but Academy rules at the time considered the close margin a tie.Under current Academy rules, double awards are given only to valid ties.
Despite mixed reviews from critics, the film ended up earning a Best Picture nomination, losing to MGM’s Grand Hotel.
-
ford vs. Ferrari (2019)
Featured Producers : Peter Chernin, Geno Topping, James Mangold
director : James Mangold
Actors : Matt Damon, Christian Bale, Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe, Tracy Letts, Josh Lucas
Studio : 20th Century FoxOther Oscar nominees/winners: Film Editing (Andrew Buckland and Michael McCusker, winners), Sound Mixing (Paul Massey, David Giamarco, Steven Morrow), Sound Editing (Donald Sylvester, Winners)
It’s a known fact: James Mangold knows how to make movies.
This film moves to the world of racing and tells the story of car designer Carroll Shelby and racing driver Ken Miles (brilliantly played by Christian Bale). The action-packed story twists and turns and creates a world where the viewer closes his eyes for fear of missing something.
Also in the well-crafted film is Tracy Letts, who goes on an unforgettable journey in a brief but memorable role as Henry Ford.
Historic non-British winner Parasite beat the film by a mile.
-
The Warrior (2010)
Producers credited: David Hoberman, Todd Lieberman, Mark Wahlberg
Director : David O. Russell
Actors : Mark Wahlberg, Christian Bale, Amy Adams, Melissa Leo, Jack Magee
Studio : Paramount PicturesOther Oscar nominees/winners: Director, Supporting Actor (Christian Bale, winner), Supporting Actress (Amy Adams), Supporting Actress (Melissa Leo, winner), Film Editing (Pamela Martin)
Much of David O. In what was the beginning of Russell’s relentless pursuit of an Oscar, directing such comedies as “Flirting with Danger” (1996) and “I Heart Huckabees” (2004), his vision it was the life of boxer Mickey Ward (Mark Wahlberg) to escape the shadow of his troubled brother, Dickie (Christian Bale), who is struggling from his last films.
This is one of the few boxing movies where the fights outside the ring far outweigh what we see inside, like the Mickey Sisters and Amy Adams.
“The Fighter” will always have a special place in my heart because it landed us one of our most coveted (and highest paid) awards campaigns ever: starring in a commercial opposite “CONSIDER” supporting actress Melissa Leo.
“Warrior” has been eclipsed by another biography, “The King’s Speech”.
-
Goodbye (1979)
Producer Credit: Peter Yates
director : Peter Yates
Actors : Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley, Barbara Barry, Paul Dolly, Robin Douglas
Studio : 20th Century FoxOther Oscar Nominees/Winners: Director , Supporting Actress (Barbara Barry), Original Screenplay (Steve Tesich, Winner), Original Adapted Screenplay (Patrick Williams)
Peter Yates’ coming-of-age film tells the story of four Indiana teenagers who use their bikes to escape a beautiful abandoned childhood dream.
Utilizing one of the greatest ensemble casts of the 1970s, the raw and fearless talent of the film’s four actors leads them all into one of the most thrilling final acts in film history.
“The Breakup” in “Kramer vs. Kramer” stars Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep.
-
King Richard (2021)
Producers credited: Tim White, Trevor White, Will Smith
director : Renaldo Marcus Green
Actors : Will Smith, Aaron Ellis, Sania Sidney, Demi Singleton, Tony Goldwyn, Jon Bernthal
Studio : Warner Bros.Other Oscar winners/nominees: Best Actor (Will Smith, winner), Supporting Actor (Aunjanu Ellis), Original Screenplay (Zach Beilein), Film Editing (Pamela Martin), Original Song (“Stay Alive” by Beyonce & Dixon)
Oscar ’94 aside, Will Smith’s transformation into Richard Williams, the father of tennis superstars Venus and Serena Williams, was a glorious effort by the veteran actor and deserves the statue he won for the picture.
What’s interesting about the film, as seen in the early days of the athlete’s training, is how director Renaldo Marcus Green isn’t afraid to present Richard as a flawed man. It shows that human behavior is not always black and white and questionable actions can have good intentions.
With a strong cast that includes supporting actress Aunjanu Ellis, newcomer Sania Sidney and comedian Jon Bernthal, Beyoncé says “King Richard” will make you feel alive.
The film lost to first-time Best Picture winner CODA.
-
Jerry Maguire (1996)
Producers credited: James L. Brooks, Lawrence Mark, Richard Sakai, Cameron Crowe
Director : Cameron Crowe
Actors: Tom Cruise, Cuba Gooding Jr., Renee Zellweger, Kelly Preston, Jerry O’Connell, Jay Moore, Bonnie Hunt, Regina King
Studio : Sony PicturesOther Oscar nominees/winners: Best Actor (Tom Cruise), Supporting Actor (Cuba Gooding Jr., winner), Original Screenplay (Cameron Crowe), Film Editing (Joe Hutchings)
Another memorable movie: Show Me the Money.
So what writer-director Cameron Crowe did for studio and movie star Tom Cruise is the moral high point in this sports agent saga.
Part romantic comedy and part buddy movie, Jerry Maguire makes no apologies for trying to appeal to the masses by using a few clichés, but it’s also completely irreverent as it brings us the hot topic between sports and football matches. . This is not surprising, considering that one of the producers of the film was none other than James L. Brooks, who knew how to create balance in “Love Contract” (1983) and “Like a Good Thing” ( 1997).
However, the film is not expected to disappoint the producer of steam engines “The English Patient”, especially since it shares a series with another comedy, “Fargo”.
-
Million Dollar Baby (2004)
Nominated Producers : Clint Eastwood, Albert S. Rudy, Tom Rosenberg (winner)
Director : Clint Eastwood
With Clint Eastwood, Hilary Swank, Morgan Freeman, Jay Baruchel, Mike Colter, Anthony Mackie, Margot Martindale.
Studio : Warner Bros.Other Oscar nominees/winners: Director (winner), Best Actor (Klima Eastwood), Best Actress (Hilary Swank, winner), Supporting Actor (Morgan Freeman, winner), Adapted Screenplay (Paul Haggis), Film Editing (Joel Cox)
It’s been a long time since Clint Eastwood’s boxing drama won the Oscar for best picture, but fell short at the last second of awards season. So from what many predicted would be Martin Scorsese’s long “Aviator” year, they shifted the narrative to a second win for Eastwood and Hilary Swank.
In typical Eastwood fashion, this is his “darkest” film yet about a tough boxer who wins the heart of his tough trainer. However, he managed to introduce what I consider to be Eastwood’s finest acting moment and introduce the world to the talent of Anthony Mackie.
-
Yankee Pride (1942)
Named Producer: Samuel Goldwyn Productions
director : Sam Wood
Actors : Gary Cooper, Teresa Wright, Babe Ruth, Walter Brennan
Studio : RKO Radio PicturesOther Oscar Winners/Nominees: Best Actor (Gary Cooper), Best Actress (Teresa Wright), Original Story (Paul Gallico), Screenplay (Herman J. Mankiewicz, Joe Swerling), Art Direction-B&W Interiors ( Perry Ferguson, Howard Bristol) ), black and white cinematography (Rudolph Mate), editing (Daniel Mandel, winner), sound design (Thomas T. Moulton), special effects (Jack Cosgrove, Ray Binger, Thomas T. Moulton), score of a drama or comedy film (Leigh Harlin)
America’s favorite pastime has a special place in our hearts, and it has heroes like New York Yankees first baseman Lou Gehrig. Released a year after Gehrig’s death from amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, the baseball film is a moving tribute to MLB Gary Cooper and Teresa Wright as his wife. Eleanor.
With one of the most important scenes in movie history, Cooper’s retirement speech on the Yankee Stadium diamond stirred the waters deeply.
The film won the first Oscar for “Mrs. Miniver.”
-
The Tricksters (1961)
Producer Credit : Robert Rossen
director : Robert Rossen
With Paul Newman, Piper Laurie, George C. Scott, Jackie Gleason, Myron McCormick
Studio : 20th Century FoxOther Oscar Nominations/Wins: Director, Best Actor (Paul Newman), Best Actress (Piper Laurie), Supporting Actor (Jackie Gleason, George C. Scott), Adapted Screenplay (Sidney Carroll, Robert Rossen) , Black & White Art Direction (Harry Horner, Gene Callahan, Winner), Black & White Cinematography (Eugene Shuftan, Winner)
It’s no surprise to young moviegoers that Paul Newman’s Oscar-winning performance in Martin Scorsese’s The Color of Money (1986) created the role of professional pool player Eddie Felson in Robert Rosson’s classic.
The film is considered by many to be one of Newman’s best acting efforts, as well as that of his co-star Jackie Gleason. But the film’s killer approach to story and character isn’t based on the question of who wins and who loses. Rather, it’s about her interactions with Eddie and how her choices affect how she feels about the audience.
In the Oscar race, the film was adapted from the musical “West Side Story” by Robert Wise and Jerome Robbins. “The Hustler” won both, as the Academy split several technical competitions between black-and-white and color drawings.
-
Field of Dreams (1989)
Credited Producers: Lawrence Gordon, Charles Gordon
Director : Phil Alden Robinson
Actors : Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, James Earl Jones, Ray Liotta, Burt Lancaster
Studio : Universal PicturesOther Oscar nominees/winners: Adapted Screenplay (Phil Alden Robinson), Original Score (James Horner)
If you build it, it will come.
Rarely does a theme of history pass, especially for a film released 35 years ago. Phil Alden Robinson’s classic baseball film notably stars Kevin Costner, who plays Ray Kinsella, a man told by his voice to make a baseball diamond.
It’s a hilarious story that leads to one of the craziest scenes in dad movies: Ray meets his dad and says, “Want to go fishing?”
With an impressive list of Best Picture nominees: “Born on the Fourth of July,” “Dead Poets Club” and “My Left Foot” all lost out to the forgettable comedy “Driving Miss Daisy.”
-
Moneyball (2011)
Health care
Director : Bennett Miller
Actors : Brad Pitt, Jonas, Philip Philip Seymour Hoffman Robin, Chris Pratt, Pash Pash, Jack Jack McGee
Studio : SonyOther Oscar Nominees/ Best Actor (ब्राद पिट), Supporting Actor (जोनास हिल), Adapted Screenplay (Steven Zalian, Aaron Sorkin) Film Editing (Christophovic Telefson)
The math is hard, but Miller Miller Miller Oakland baseball to decide to decide.
By Stephen Zalian Aaron Sorkin has managed to make it easier for Sony to say it’s smarter.
It’s almost like a suspenseful movie playing, with an interesting theme.
Unfortunately, the drama gave way to the “artist” in the silent film called The Last Prize.

They all went to the movies and heard Rocky’s version of the story. … Usually the next day, the next morning, you’ll wake up, have raw eggs, and head out for breakfast, when you leave without trying again
What could be called one of the top five movie compilations of all time, , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , , Category من كيكياغاكف سايتوف, especially “network” was attractive as it won three awards for acting and original play. However, DGA winner “Rocky” won, and the films have been considered one of the films ever since. Watching TV commercials and movie trailers back then, I love hearing Stallone compared to Marlon Brando, Paul Al Pacino, Pacino and Robert.
They didn’t know what happened next.
